James Stephen Hogg Founded the Longview News – Longview’s first paper – when he is only 20 years old. Hogg later serves as governor of Texas from 1891-1895

1871 – Longview is incorporated in May, The first community in Gregg County to do so. A post office is established in 
            1871 as well.

1872 – The International Railroad builds a connection between Longview and Palestine, The city of Kilgore is founded 
             the same year.

1894 – May 23, Bill Dalton leads his famous Dalton posse into Longview and holds up the First National Bank. A gunfight 
            pursues, killing three local men and one outlaw.

1920 – Longview Rotary Club is organized.

1925 – The W.E. Nunnelee Bus Line is the first franchised motor bus line in Texas when it begins to offer passenger 
             service from Tyler to Gladewater and Mount Pleasant in March.

1929 – The five story Gregg Hotel, the hotel to be owned and operated by Conrad Hilton, is constructed in downtown 
             Longview. The site of the historic hotel is now the location of Heritage Plaza, where the history of Longview is 
             often the site of musical performances and other community events.

1930 – October, Columbus Marion “Dad” brings in the Bradford No. 3 oil well in Rusk County.

1931 – January, oil is discovered at 3,587 feet at J.K. Lathrop lease near Longview Texas and begins producing 18,000 
             barrels a day.

1932 – The current Gregg County Courthouse is constructed in downtown Longview.

1937 – In June, oil is discovered at the Mrs. Bess Johnson-Adams & Hale No. 1 well in the city of Kilgore, leading to the 
            location of 24 wells on 10 lots at the “World’s Richest Acre” at Commerce and Main Streets.

1938 – In May, the first official Gladewater Round Up Rodeo is held in Gladewater.

1945 – In June, Gregg County Airport is completed south of Longview.

1950 – Robert Newhouse, a member of the Dallas Cowboys from 1972 to 1983 and the third all time leading rusher in team 
            history, is born in Longview on January 9, 1950.

1954 – Lake Gladewater is constructed to provide recreation for city residents.

1958 – The Longview Museum of Fine Arts is created by the Junior Service League of Longview.  

1959 – Good Shepherd Hospital assumes the operations of Gregg Memorial Hospital from the Gregg County 
            Commissioners Court.

1964-1968 – Interstate Hwy 20 is constructed through Gregg County.

1965 – The City of Canton buys 6 acres to be used for First Monday Trade Days.

1966- Schlitz brewery and container factory is built in Longview.

1976 – Construction of Longview’s current City Hall and Longview High School are completed.

1978 – The Great Texas Balloon Race begins at the Longview Mall. The Balloon Race is now held at the East Texas 
            Regional Airport each summer.

1980 – Longview’s Regional Hospital is founded to offer health-care services for a growing area population.

1982 – The Historic Jefferson Foundation begins presenting its annual Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes in 
            Jefferson during December.

1984 – Maude Cobb Activity Center opens in Longview.

1985 – Northeast Texas Community College holds its first classes ever.

1986 – Christopher “Chris” Davis, a first baseman for the Texas Rangers, is born March, 17, 1986, in Longview Texas.

1992 – TSTC Marshall opens on U.S. 59, less than two miles from I-20.

1995 – In December, Neiman Marcus opens a 420,000-square-foot national distribution center in Longview.

2000 – University of Texas at Tyler Longview University Center opens its doors.

2003 – A new all-aluminum rodeo arena is constructed in Gladewater at a cost of $1 million.
